Hey, I'm Evan
Writer, finance nerd, and Indonesian trying to figure out money — just like you.
I started Evan Today because I was tired of financial advice that didn't apply to life in Indonesia. Most personal finance content out there is written for Americans or Europeans — talking about 401(k)s, ISAs, and credit scores that don't exist here. We have our own system, our own tools, and our own challenges.
I'm not a certified financial planner. I'm someone who spent years making money mistakes — blowing my THR on things I didn't need, ignoring BPJS until I actually needed it, and keeping all my savings in a regular BCA account earning basically nothing. Eventually I started learning, experimenting, and documenting what worked.
This blog is that documentation. Everything I write comes from actual research, real experience using Indonesian financial products, and genuine curiosity about how money works in Southeast Asia.
What you'll find here
I write about the stuff that actually matters for people living in Indonesia:
- How to budget when your income is in Rupiah and everything on the internet is priced in USD
- Which digital bank actually gives the best interest rate this month (spoiler: it changes constantly)
- Whether that unit link insurance your agent is pushing is actually worth it (usually no)
- How to start investing with Rp 100,000 — because not everyone has millions lying around
- Honest comparisons of fintech apps, not sponsored fluff
My approach
I try to write like I'm explaining something to a friend over kopi. No jargon for the sake of sounding smart. No generic advice like "just save more." Instead, I focus on specific, actionable steps that work in the Indonesian context.
If I recommend something, it's because I've used it or researched it thoroughly — not because someone paid me to say it's good. When I do have affiliate links, I'll always tell you.
